Ethylene Diamine DiSuccinate This is a low molecular weight, non-sorptive and non-volatile ingredient which is readily and ultimately biodegradable. EDDS is used at a low level (less than 1%) in laundry detergents as a chelator. Its function in the laundry is to soften the wash water by sequestering (i.e. keeping in solution) the hardness ions. EDTA causes concerns in environmental terms because it is non-biodegradable and considered to remain bioactive in the environment. Because Tri Nature has used it in only small amounts (not as a primary phosphate replacement) and because its presence has been vital to the stability or efficacy of our products, we have adjudged its use to be warranted up until now. Until recently there has been no alternative to its use - but now there is EDDS. EDDS provides all the advantages of EDTA - stain removal, dye and fabric protection, hard water salt chelation (water softening, formula stabilisation, hard water scale inhibition, preservative potentiator) - but is readily biodegradable and therefore deactivated in the environment.
In Europe EDDS is approved by Nordic Swan, EU Flower and Bra Miljoval (Sweden) eco labels. EDDS won the UK Green Technology Award for Product Chemistry in 2003. EDDS is manufactured, in relatively small amounts, at just one location in the UK. Currently there is no significant use of EDDS in Australia and Tri Nature imports all of its requirements direct from the manufacturers.
